How do we create, navigate, and sustain our career lives amid constant change and increasing uncertainty?
This question is a growing concern and has become the basis for a broader reflective conversation I increasingly have with my clients.
Is there a single future-proof strategy that will circumvent the changes and uncertainty we face? The answer is no, but we can nonetheless remain engaged, creative, and strategically flexible.
We can actively analyze, question, and gain context and perspective on the changes occurring; we can identify what we are experiencing personally and reflect on how we are internalizing both change and uncertainty. We can also identify the impact this may be having on our actions, motivation, assumptions, expectations, choices, goal development, and decisions.
We can then use all this information to pinpoint more specific questions, issues, or challenges we may have; this can help us better organize our research into the current job market, specific professions, or growing opportunities; it can help structure and guide our networking; and all of this helps us stay proactive and creatively open to developing and adjusting relevant, personalized strategies and approaches to our careers that work with changes and uncertainty rather than against them.
